This may be a tough pill to swallow, but although you may have your own business, you are chasing your dream, and you are getting some sales, to be really honest, you really aren't working hard enough at your passion. As entrepreneurs, we need to constantly evaluate our performance and stay focused on our end goal. Once you experience a moderate amount of "success" it becomes real easy to become stagnant and complacent. First, you start indirectly developing excuses for why you aren't doing things like you used to and eventually you will start "hoping" things will continue to fall in to place. Does this sound familiar? It does for me.
Here are the 4 main reasons why you are unable to work as hard as you should as an entrepreneur:
1. You celebrate success too early.
There is no better feeling than the validation of success and while I do think you should recognize short term wins, realize that you haven't won the game just yet. This happens all the time in sports. Players will celebrate scoring touchdowns too early or get confident with a big time lead, and eventually lose focus on winning the game. As entrepreneurs, we should focus on the long term goal at all times. Never lose sight and continue to work hard.
2. You are tired.
To be honest, you probably are working real hard and work many late nights, but you can not be effective if you don't gain an adequate amount of sleep or rest. Prioritize your sleeping patterns and load balance your work. Figure out a cadence that keeps you on point and on your feet. Don't rely on supplements, such as energy drinks, coffee, etc. Get the rest you need to be successful.
3. You are comfortable.
I'm sure that you have a strategy and detailed plan that is helping your company grow, but have you tried anything different? When was the last time you redesigned your website, reinvested time into creating a new product, or stepped outside of your comfort zone personally and professionally? I struggle with this all of the time. I am so used to doing the same activities that I know will work, but what if I did something else that could help my business grow even further. Ultimately, the reason why we are so resistant to change is because of the fear of failure and our reluctance to adding more work to our plate. Embrace change and revisit this topic as much as possible. Never get comfortable.
4. You don't have time.
Nobody really has enough time. You have got to find a way around this obstacle. Here are some suggestions. Try working while you eat, work on the weekends, plan out set times to work on different channels each week, eliminate extracurricular activities, be transparent with your friends and family and explain that you are focusing on your dream, stop watching TV, wake up early in the morning and work before work, etc. I can go on and on, but you have to make time for your dream.
The truth of the matter is that we are all working hard on our dreams, but to reach to the next level, as crazy as it sounds, we must work harder. Stay positive and keep chopping at the tree. It will fall down eventually with some reinforcement (hard work) and extra muscle.
